Origin:
The flag of Poland has its origin in the 13th century, when the Piastas dynasty decided that the white eagle on a red surface was the patriotic symbol. In 1792, the Poles who participated in the first anniversary of the country’s constitution came dressed in red and white, as a symbol of patriotism. Then, the Russian czars banned this kind of symbology.
History:
The Polish flag consists of two horizontal stripes that divide it into two equal parts. The upper part is white and the lower part is red. It was introduced in 1910, although until 1997 it was not accepted as a national emblem in the official text of the nation. Since the middle of the 19th century, the Duchy of Warsaw became the Polish Congress in union with the Russian Empire, thus carrying for some time the cross of St. Andrew, symbol of the tsarist dynasty. Already after the revolt of the Polish people, the current colors had been established.
Meaning:
The flag is made up of two horizontal stripes of the same size, in red and white heraldic colors.
The upper white band represents the White Eagle of the Polish coat of arms and an emblem of the Piast dynasty that founded the nation. It also represents order, integrity, and purity by evoking sacred waters and nobility.
The lower red band evokes fire and majesty. It represents courage, bravery, dignity, blood, and strength. For the Poles it symbolizes the blood shed in defense of the fatherland and freedom during many occupations.
In Poland, there is also a second flag with a red shield containing a white eagle at the center of the white band. This flag is reserved by law for embassies, airports, ports and merchant ships (flag). The Polish citizen normally uses the single bicolor flag.
The colors of the banner are none other than those of the coat of arms of the Polish nation. White and red are paneslav colors, which began to appear in all the symbology related to the Polish flag since the middle of the 20th century. Currently, what the Poles notice, it’s that when you find this flag in a store, you see that the white represents the hope of peace, while the red symbolizes the reference to socialism which governed the nation.
