Origin:
Approved on 1911 by the Portuguese Assembly, it involved a radical change in respect to its ancestress. This new Portuguese Flag sported the colours representing the new Republic in the country, breaking with the previous symbols of the overthrown constitutional monarchy.
History:
After the failed republican putsch of 1891, the green and red became adopted by the Republican Party by joining all the events that favoured the Revolution of 1910. Its design was chosen by a jury of Portuguese personalities formed by the politician, journalist and diplomat João Pinheiro, the painter Columbano Bordalo as well as the military and diplomatic Abel Botelho.
Meaning :
The green colour represents the hope of the nation, and the red, the blood of those who lost their lives for their country, with the intention of giving a more patriotic than political symbolism. The shield contained in the Flag of Portugal is a simplification of the coat of arms of the Portuguese Republic. The five blue shields represent the victory of King Alfonso Henriques over the five Muslim kings in the Battle of Ourique.
The dots inside the shields refer to the five wounds of Jesus Christ. In addition, seven castles symbolize the victories of the Portuguese nation over its enemies and an allusion to the Algarve Kingdom. And the armillary sphere represents the world discovered during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries by the Portuguese navigators.
