Origin:
The flag of Greece or "Galanolefki" takes root in the 19th century, during the uprising that broke out against its Turkish neighbors. The blue and white Greek insignia are raised in order to put an end to the Ottoman flag of the half-moon, Greece being for four centuries under the domination of the powerful Ottoman Empire.
History:
The regime of the colonels, a dictatorial period that governed Greece between 1967 and 1974, declared this flag of blue and white stripes with a cross in the upper left corner as the official insignia of the Greeks. Previously, a blue emblem with the cross had been used. Finally, adoption at international level took place in 1978.
Meaning:
The nine white and blue stripes of the Greek flag refer to the 9 revolutionary syllables Eleftheria i Thanatos, which in French means Freedom or Death. This phrase was used during the independence of Greece in the Hellenic Revolution of 1821. As you probably imagined, the blue directly mentions the Greek sea, the sea that inspired this revolution, while the white symbolizes revolutionary ideas, direct mention to the Orthodox Church, which maintained the Greek identity even in times of occupation. However, some say that the nine bands represent the nine Greek muses, daughters of Zeus.
