Origin:
The Belgian flag is inspired by that of France. The French Revolution of 1789 had a strong impact on European thought. However, originally Belgium had horizontal stripes instead of vertical ones. They were seen for the first time in 1789, after the Brabant revolution, and had red, black and yellow colors, which corresponded to the colors of the Duchy of Brabant.
History:
The first official escutcheon was accepted in 1831, after the proclamation of Belgian independence from the Netherlands. It had the same colors, but a vertical layout, to differentiate from the Dutch one. However, the color order has also been changed, as it is now red, yellow and black.
Curiously, and for "heraldic reasons", it was decided to reverse the colors and place the darkest one on the mast. Although this change is not reflected in Article 193 of its constitution, Belgium is the only country in the world that does not strictly follow the legal indications of its flag.
Signification :
Black, yellow and red are the colors the colors worn by Brabant rebels during the uprising against the Austrians in the 18th century. They also appeared when Belgium rebelled against William I of the Netherlands. They won on this occasion, and since then these colors have given meaning to the struggle for independence and freedom.
