The flag of the Netherlands is derived from the Prinsenvlag or "prince’s banner", used before the official creation of the country, to designate the territory then occupied by the Spaniards.
Originally, there was not a specific flag of the Netherlands, only a multitude of flags from all regions that made up the country.
William I of Orange-Nassau, leading the revolt against Spanish rule, gave the colors of the flag of the seven United Provinces (orange, white and blue). According to one hypothesis, since orange was not visible enough for a flag at sea, it was later (in the 17th century) replaced by red.
History:
Also known by the nickname "Flag of the Prince", the current tricolour was used at the same time as its predecessor in the States-General. This reflects the complexity of the power structure in the Netherlands at the time, having on the one hand the member of the House of Orange, known as Estatúder, and on the other the Estates-General.
Although the Netherlands regained its independence after the French occupation and the Prince of Orange returned from exile, the tricolor flag was reused in both versions, both versions being equally official, although in public buildings the red, white and blue were mainly used.
Meaning:
The color red, white and blue was retained in 1814 upon the return of the House of Orange which marked the newfound independence of the Netherlands. The red, white, and blue tricolor was finally adopted by decree in 1937.
