Origin:
The tri-colour German flag is inspired in the “Freikorps” colours, which were the uniforms used by German soldiers during the Napoleonic wars. It is one of the most important symbols of the country.
History:
Having been formally adopted for the first time during the Weimar Republic in 1919, it stopped being used during the Nazi reign under Bismarck govern, but it is used again as the national flag during the German Federal Republic.
It was also used in the mid-nineteenth century in the German Confederation. After the Second World War, Occidental Germany and the German Democratic Republic used the same ensign, until the last one added the state shield in 1959. On the other hand, between 1866 and 1918, the used ensign had the black, white and red colour, and was distinctive of the German Empire.
It was used again during the Nazi period, until 1949 when the black, red and yellow colours were finally defined.
Meaning:
The German Flag or the Flag of Germany is formed by three horizontal stripes of the same size, with the colours black, red and yellow. The black colour corresponds to the uniform colours used by the soldiers. Meanwhile yellow refers to the copper gold bottoms which also included red on the decorations.
