Origin:
Although the last version was only adopted in 1993, it is certain that the Slovak flag with the arrangement of colors we know today has been used since 1938.
Story:
During the Middle Ages, the flag of Slovakia had two horizontal white and red stripes. A middle of the 19th century, a blue band was added, forming a red, white and blue tricolor flag, inspired by Russian and Croatian emblems.
In 1920, Slovakia was annexed to Czechoslovakia, whose badge was the same as that used in the Middle Ages, but with a blue triangle on the mast side joining the two stripes.
Between 1938 and 1945, a tricolor was used with the same arrangement of colors as the current one. The same year, after the restoration of Czechoslovakia, the previous banner was reused, until the separation of Slovakia and the Czech Republic in 1993 which restored the 1938 version, but with the shield. Meaning:
The shield added to the Slovak flag is formed by a double cross on three hills and a red background. The cross represents the three most important saints of the country: St. Methodius, St. Cyril and St. Benedict, while the three hills refer to the mountains Mátra - currently in Hungary -, Fatra and Tatra.
