The Czechoslovak and then Czech flag is composed of three colors: blue, white, and red, Panslavic colors adopted at the Panslavic Convention in Prague in 1848.
Story :
Just like neighboring Poland, the country’s historical colors are red and white. At the time of the Spring of the Peoples, the idea of pan-Slavism was born, whose impact was to complete the initial two-tone flag that was that of the Bohemian crown with blue. Several stories circulate on this subject - one speaks of the colors of Slovakia, the other of the adoption of those of the flag of Russia, itself tricolor.
With the declaration of independence of Czechoslovakia in October 1918, the question arose as to which national emblems should be used to represent the newly established republic in the world and unify the two Slavic countries. A special commission was then created, under the leadership of university professor G. Friedrich in 1919 to propose, among other emblems, a new flag.
The solution finally chosen is that of the historic two-tone flag of Bohemia with a blue corner that advances up to one third of the flag. After modifications, the corner extends to the middle of the flag. The Chamber of Deputies approves this final version on March 30, 1920.
Meaning :
The colors are as much historical as symbolic. White (silver) is the traditional color of Bohemia; it represents the sky. Red represents Moravia, but also the blood spilled for national freedom. Blue is the traditional color of Slovakia. It is also a symbol of impartiality and sovereignty.
