Origin and History:
According to tradition, the design of this flag was born during the siege of Saint-Jean d'Acre in 1191. After a fierce fight, Duke Leopold V then withdrew his belt. His white tunic was then tinged with blood except for the area protected by the belt, revealing this famous central white band. Thus was born one of the oldest flags in the world, adopted officially in 1230.
Singification:
Each element of the flag and its composition have a strong meaning. The horizontal layout evokes the stability and unity of the Austrian people throughout the centuries. Red traditionally represents the strength, bravery and courage of defenders of the nation. Historically, it recalls the blood shed by Duke Leopold V during battles for independence and faith. The central white line represents purity, peace and honesty. It also symbolizes the Danube, the protective and driving force of Austria, which crosses the country from west to east.
