Origin :
The origin of the Norwegian flag is linked to the countries surrounding it. With Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland, it is the Scandinavian region that hides behind it stories of union and disunion. In common, the Scandinavian cross presents in all the badges of the Nordic countries; a cross that extends vertically towards the raised side and which symbolizes the values of Christianity.
History:
The Norwegian flag was accepted by his government in 1821, but without the approval of the king and with the peculiarity that it could only fly in the waters of the country. The ships were therefore required to raise the Swedish flag when they left this Nordic country. In 1938, the Norwegian monarch authorized the use of this emblem for the rest of the world.
Meaning :
The red, blue and white colors of this flag have a similar meaning to that of American or British insignia: freedom, itself inspired by the colors of the French nation after the revolution of 1789. It is inspired by the Danish flag. Nevertheless, it has the same shape, but without the blue color, which is present in the Swedish color. In fact, it is said that the Norwegian language is the symbol of union with Sweden.
