The flag of Finland was officially recognized on 29 May 1918, just six months after Parliament signed the Declaration of Independence, by which the Grand Duchy of Finland became an independent nation of the Russian Empire.
History:
Although not having an official emblem until 1918, the truth is that the Finns already showed signs of eagerness to establish their own symbols since 1860, in connection with the movement of Fennomans. Of political origin, they founded the Finnish Party and turned to the defense of their language and culture.
Two versions of the banner can be distinguished: the national or civil and the state, which is the one used by government institutions and has the shield (a golden lion with a sword and crown on a red background, and edged with 9 silver-colored roses).
According to the instructions of the Ministry of the Interior, those who have a mast should raise the badge at 8 o'clock in the morning and lower it at 9 o'clock in the evening.
Meaning:
Inspired by the Dannebrog or Danish flag, the Finnish flag has the Scandinavian cross at its center. It is also known by the Finnish name "Siniristilippu". The blue color of the cross refers to Finland’s many lakes and the sky, just as white symbolizes the country’s constant snow.
Some say that the Scandinavian cross was adopted after the end of World War I, while others comment that it is based on ancient Nordic legends.
