History :
The use of the Latvian flag was interrupted in the year 1940, when the country was annexed to the Soviet Union. The following year it was invaded by Nazi Germany, but in 1944 it fell back into the hands of the Soviets. As you see, the history of Latvia in this twentieth century has been quite moving.
Once in the hands of the Soviets, again, it became the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic. Thus, since 1953 they used a red flag, typical communist color, with the golden symbols of the sickle, the hammer and a five-pointed star on the upper left side, and blue and white waves throughout the lower part. This remained so until 1990, when Latvia broke away from the USSR and proclaimed its own banner, recovering the design that had been approved in 1921.
Meaning :
It is formed by three horizontal bands: a white central and two attached to the ends of garnet tone, whose dimension is double that of white. It must be said that, as early as the 13th century, some Latvian tribes wore red insignia with a white line in the center.
