Flag of Switzerland available in 100% Polyester fabric and various measures from 060X100 to 150x300. Particularly suitable for outdoor use and manufactured in European union.

Origin & History :
The flag of Switzerland represents the national identity, history and traditions of the country. Officially adopted in the course of its political and cultural evolution, it is now a symbol recognized worldwide. Its colors and shapes reflect the national values as well as the unity of the people of Switzerland.

Initially, Switzerland was an alliance of sovereign states and each state had its own flag. The problem was that in common battles, they could not distinguish between allies and enemies. Then during the Battle of Laupen (1339), soldiers sew two strips of white fabric on their clothes to form a cross. Gradually, the white cross was integrated into the military flags of the various cantons. At this time, the cross was long and thin. It crosses the entire flag to the edges of the fabric. The background is not necessarily red: it can vary according to the canton, but the red eventually imposed itself because it was the color of the "high justice" and imperial sovereignty.

In 1798, when Napoleon invaded Switzerland, he imposed a centralized state. The flag then changes to become a green, red and yellow tricolour. It was then abandoned when the French influence diminished because for the Swiss of the time, this represented foreign occupation and the end of the autonomy of the cantons (states). After the fall of Napoleon, Switzerland was divided. The flag would serve as a "cement" to unite the country.

1840: General Guillaume-Henri Dufour, a central figure in Swiss history, wants to unify the federal army. He imposes a single flag for all the soldiers: the reamed white cross (which does not touch the edges) on a red background.

1848: When the federal constitution was created, this military flag became the official national flag. It was the birth of modern Switzerland.

Meaning :
Each colour and symbol of the Swiss flag has a special meaning related to the history, culture or geography of the country. The design of the flag usually expresses the ideals of freedom, sovereignty, peace and national pride.
On December 23, 1889, the Federal Council precisely determined the design: a cross made up of five squares of equal size.

Did you know ? the branches are 1/6 longer than wide and, unlike the maritime flags of other countries which are rectangular to better float in the wind, the Swiss flag has retained its square format by tradition to recall the old medieval war banners.
