Origin:
The flag of Italy originated in the late 18th century under the influence of the French Revolution. The instigator of the flag of Italy is none other than Napoleon Bonaparte, he imagined it during his military campaigns, in this way he introduced a flag very similar to that of France with green replacing blue in order to take on the color of the uniforms of the urban militia of Milan and the Lombard Legion.
History:
In November 1796 the volunteer corps of the Lombard Legion, incorporated into the French army, received the so-called flag from the hands of Napoleon. Although this flag ceased to be used as an "official" for a time, it continued to be used as a symbol of freedom during popular revolts. It was officially adopted for the first time by the Cispadane Republic on 7 January 1797, becoming in the 19th century the symbol of the Risorgimento (Italian unification).
After the fall of Napoleon, Italy was dominated by foreign powers and the tricolor flag was banned. During the Risorgimento (the unification movement), insurgents wore these colors in every revolt. In 1848, the king of Sardinia, Charles Albert, adopted it for his troops by adding the coat of arms of the House of Savoy in the center, to show that his dynasty supported the cause of Italian Unity.
During the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861, the tricolor flag with the shield of Savoy (a white cross on a red background, edged with blue) became officially the national flag. It will remain so for more than 80 years, going through the two world wars.
It was replaced on 2 June 1946 after the fall of the Italian monarchy, during the referendum to become the Italian Republic. On 19 June, the monarchical arms were removed from the centre of the flag.
The 1947 Constitution definitively seals its appearance in Article 12:
" The flag of the Republic is the Italian tricolor: green, white and red, with three vertical stripes of equal dimensions."
It is then established with the current model.
Meaning :
About the origins of the three colours of the flag of Italy there is a theory which relates this ensign to a secret society which had a notable influence on the political panorama of the Italian territory.
Francesco Dall'Ongaro, a nineteen century poet, using a description of the Italian territory, explained the symbolism of the colours: ""White like the Alps, red like volcanos and green like the plains of Lombardy"".
The stripes are vertical, with the green side the one that is placed next to the flagpole.
