Story:
The Estonian flag was created at the end of the 19th century. It was associated with Estonian nationalism and was used as a national flag in 1918, when the country proclaimed its independence, but its use was banned during the occupation of the Soviet Union in 1940, in exchange for that of the Estonian SSR, which consisted of a red background with a sickle and hammer on the upper left side, as well as the letters ENSV, which allude to the country’s name in Estonian. It was banned during the Nazi occupation, after which the tricolor flag was raised, although for a short time, since red reappeared, which in 1953 included blue waves at the bottom.
It’s only in 1989 that tricolor flag blue, black and white reappeared in Tallinn.
Meaning
The three stripes of the Estonian flag represent the sky, the sea and lakes as well as loyalty to nationalist ideas, the faith and loyalty, represented by the color blue situated in the superior part of the flag. White means effort, and black is linked to estonian lands and the suffering of its inhabitants.
