Origin :
The three colours of the flag of Armenia (Yeragooyn) have their roots in the royal dynasties that ruled the country throughout the millennia. Although banners with various colors have existed since antiquity (Artaxiad and Arsacide dynasties), the current tricolor was first defined at the end of the 19th century by the Armenian Institute in Venice to represent the nation. It was officially adopted at the first independence in 1918, and then reinstated by the Supreme Council of the Republic of Armenia on 24 August 1990, just before the fall of the Soviet Union.
Story :
The history of Armenian emblems dates back to 189 BC, when eagles and lions adorned the royal banners. In the Middle Ages, the kingdom of Cilicia already used similar colors when interacting with crusaders.
The modern flag appears during the national awakening of the 19th century. After centuries of Ottoman and Persian rule, the Armenians seek a symbol of unity. In 1918, when the Democratic Republic of Armenia was established, red, blue and orange were chosen (instead of yellow as it was considered more harmonious). During the Soviet period, this flag was banned and replaced by a red version with a horizontal blue stripe and the sickle and hammer. In 1990, in a bid for sovereignty, the historic tricolor was restored. In 2006, a specific law on the national flag was enacted to specify the exact shades of the three horizontal stripes to ensure uniformity of the state emblem.
Meaning:
The national flag of Russia consists of three horizontal stripes of equal dimensions: white, blue and red.
A historical symbolism: Originally, these colors were associated with the unity of the Slavic peoples ("Great Russia", "Little Russia" and "White Russia"), but today they are given moral meanings:
The White: Symbolizes nobility, frankness, and peace.
Blue: Represents loyalty, chastity, and fidelity (the color traditionally associated with the Virgin Mary in Russia).
The Red: Embodies courage, generosity and love, but also blood shed for the homeland.
A pan-slavic identity: The colors of the Russian flag have served as the basis for the "pan-slavic colors", influencing the flags of many other countries in Eastern Europe (Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, etc.).
An emblem of continuity: The return of this flag in 1991 symbolizes the link between modern Russia and its pre-1917 imperial heritage, marking the end of the Soviet era and a return to secular national traditions.
