Also called 'Taegeukgi', the South Korean flag was created and officially adopted in 1883, during the Joseon Dynasty, which reigned in Korea from the late 14th century to the early 20th century.
History :
It is not entirely clear who was the creator of the South Korean flag. But in August 1910, Korea was annexed to Japan, and thus began a period of more than three decades of Japanese rule in which the banner was banned.
After the end of World War II, the Soviets occupied the northern part of Korea, while the Americans occupied the southern part. Thus began the division that has led to what we now know as North Korea and South Korea.
Meaning :
The meaning of the South Korean flag is in its own name. 'Taeguk' refers to the Taoist symbol that appears at the center of it, and which is the representation of yin and yang. And 'Gi' is the Chinese letter for the signs. So, then, 'Taegeukgi' means: "The flag of the Taoist symbol".
Completing the badge, you see four trigrams around the symbol. These make reference to the elements of nature: fire, water, earth and sky.
The white color of the background symbolizes purity and peace, and the red and blue of the symbol, good and evil, that mix infinitely.
