Origin:
The origin of the flag of Georgia, known as Five-Cross Flag, dates back to the Middle Ages, specifically the fourteenth century under King George V “the Shining. This symbol has its roots in the country’s deep Orthodox Christian tradition. The central cross is the Cross of Saint George (patron saint of the country), surrounded by four small crosses of Jerusalem (or "bolnissi" crosses). After being banned during the Soviet period, this historic flag was reinstated by Parliament on January 14, 2004, following the "Rose Revolution", to replace the burgundy flag used since the independence of 1991.
History:
As early as the 13th century, white banners marked with a red cross were used by Georgian troops. The current five-cross configuration appears on medieval navigational charts to identify the city of Tbilisi.
The flag has crossed centuries as a symbol of resistance. During the Mongol invasion, then under Persian and Ottoman rule, it remained the rallying sign of Caucasian Christianity. After the annexation by the Russian Empire, then integration into the USSR, this flag was banned in favor of communist imagery. In 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union, Georgia first adopted a burgundy-colored flag, but the people remain attached to the medieval symbol. It was in 2004 that an official law came to enshrine the definitive return of the flag to the five crosses, thus affirming Georgia’s return to its historical roots and European identity.
Meaning:
The national flag of Georgia consists of a large red cross centered on a white background, accompanied by four small red crosses in each neighborhood.
Strong symbolism : The flag is rich in a religious and heroic interpretation:
The White Background: Symbolizes innocence, purity, wisdom, and peace.
The Five Red Crosses: They represent the five wounds of Christ (both hands, both feet and the lance-pierced side). Red embodies courage, justice and love.
A unique identity: The design is inspired by the Cross of Jerusalem. For the Georgians, it symbolizes divine protection over the country and its position as a bastion of Christian culture at the crossroads of Europe and Asia.
An emblem of renewal: Since its restoration in 2004, this flag has become a symbol of the state’s modernization and desire for international integration, while remaining rooted in a legacy that dates back more than seven centuries.
