The current Singapore flag was created by a committee and approved on December 3, 1959.
History :
Singapore was under British rule since 1819, so the 'Union Jack' or flag of the United Kingdom waved in the territory until the twentieth century. In 1959 the banner was created, but Singapore was, another six years more, part of Malaysia. It was not until 1965 when the country became totally independent.
As a curiosity we must say that initially the flag was going to be red, but to avoid that the country was associated with the communist parties, a white stripe was added.
Meaning :
This flag of Singapore is formed by two horizontal halves, the upper one being red and the lower one white. Red refers to universal fraternity, and white refers to virtue. On the other hand, it is said that the different ethnic groups of the country were taken into account when designing the banner. Thus, it is assumed that red refers to the Chinese, and white, to the Malays.
Likewise, in the upper left part he has drawn a white half moon, which the Malays demanded as an expression of Islam, and which represents a growing young nation; and five white five-pointed stars, demanded by the Chinese, and which symbolize the ideals of Singapore, which are the following: democracy, equality, justice, peace and progress.
