Flag of San Marino available in 100% Polyester fabric and various measures from 060X100 to 150x300. Particularly suitable for outdoor use and manufactured in European union.
Origin & History:
The origin of the colors of San Marino dates back to the late Middle Ages, but the flag has evolved over the centuries.
The first flag (1399): Originally, the flag of San Marino was a horizontal tricolor consisting of yellow, white and blue. The yellow and white came from the coat of arms of the Montefeltro family (allied with San Marino), and the blue represented the sky.
The adoption of the bicolor (1797): On 24 February 1797, the Supreme Council of the Republic decided to change the colors to adopt the current white and sky blue. This choice was strongly influenced by the waves of rebellions and political changes in Europe following the French Revolution.
The modern official version: The current design, which officially incorporates the state coat of arms in the center for official use, was standardized by law on April 6, 1862. Some minor adjustments (notably on the exact shades of blue and the details of the coat of arms) were finalized in 2011.
Meaning:
The flag is divided into two horizontal bands of equal size:
The white stripe (top): It symbolizes peace, purity and according to some interpretations, the snow that sometimes covers Mount Titano in winter.
The blue stripe (bottom): It represents heaven and freedom, a fundamental value for this Republic that has struggled for centuries to preserve its independence.
At the center of the flag (for the state version) are the official coat of arms of San Marino, which tells the story and geography of the country:
The azure blazon: It contains three green towers (Guaita, Cesta, and Montale) located at the top of the three peaks of Mount Titano, the highest point in the country. Each tower is topped with a silver ostrich feather (which replaces the old metal weather vanes).
The crown - Located above the coat of arms, it does not represent a monarchy, but symbolizes the sovereignty and independence of the oldest republic in the world.
The crown of branches - The crest is surrounded by a laurel branch (symbol of victory and constancy) and an oak branch (symbol of strength).
The motto is a white ribbon at the bottom with the Latin inscription "LIBERTAS" (Freedom). This is the historical slogan of San Marino, which was said to have been uttered by its holy founder, the mason San Marino, fleeing from religious persecution in the fourth century.
Did you know ? > There are two versions of the flag. The civil flag (used by citizens) is a simple two-tone white and blue without the coat of arms. The state flag (used by government and institutions) has the coat of arms in the center. It is the latter that is best known internationally.
