The flag of Uruguay is also known as the National Pavilion, and was adopted with its current colors in December 1828. In July 1830, the banner went from having nine celestial stripes to only four.
History :
The birth of the Uruguayan banner was born after the need to create its own symbols after the country achieved its independence from Argentina and Brazil, because until then they used the symbols of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata to which they belonged. They kept the colors of the emblem of the United Provinces (Argentina), and reserved the upper left square to place a sun on a white background. In 1952 it was specified that the sun should be a radiant circle with 16 rays.
As an anecdote, it can be pointed out that the layout of the Uruguayan badge is inspired by the flag of the United States. And as a curiosity we must mention that Uruguayans must swear their flag at least once in their lives.
Every June 19, the children who enter the school first promise the flag, while those who enter the first year of secondary school swear by it.
Meaning :
The Uruguayan flag is formed by nine horizontal bands, of which four are celestial and five white. In total, nine, corresponding to the departments in which the country was divided at that time: Canelones, Cerro Largo, Colonia, Durazno, Maldonado, Montevideo, Paysandú, San José, and Soriano.
As for the sun, it is said to symbolize the independence of the viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata in Spain, as well as Uruguay's link with the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata.
