Origin:
Officially the Union flag (flag of the Union), and also known as the Union Jack: the United Kingdom flag was approved on 1802 to represent the union of the three crowns, being therefore a combination of the English flag or St George’s Cross, the Scottish Flag or St Andrew’s Cross and the old Irish flag or St Patrick’s Cross.
History:
If we take a look at the United Kingdom flag, we observe that it contains the St George Cross on its centre, in red colour, and the Scottish flag in the background represented by St. Andrew's cross. This is due to the fact that Scotland’s incorporation to the United Kingdom of Great Britain, emerged the possibility of melting the two flags, creating a new one.
Thereby, in this new flag, the St George’s cross was highlighted, and on the Scottish version, the St Andew’s cross was the one highlighted. Finally, with the incorporation of North Ireland, the St Patrick’s cross was added to the English flag, forming part of the Union Jack, which is the United Kingdom we know nowadays. As a curious fact, is has to be said that it has to be hoisted with the wider white band diagonally upward near the flagpole.
Meaning:
"Three saints and three ancient legends". The crosses refer to a gentleman, a martyr and a slave, representing England, Scotland and Ireland, respectively.
St George Cross: King Edward III concluded that the Windsor House had descended as far back as the King of Silca. Therefore, he decided that England would be devoted to St George and use his blazon as representative of the entire Kingdom. It is a red Greek cross (or gules) on a white background.
St. Andrew's cross: this Blue Cross with the shape of a blade on a white background has its origin, according to an ancient tradition, on the crucifixion of the Apostle of the same name.
In heraldry it acquires the meaning of an unbeaten leader in combat. The famous Cross of Burgundy is a variant of the St George’s cross.
St. Patrick’s Cross: it is a red version on soft background of St Andrew’s cross. In heraldic terms it can be emblazoned argent, and the cross in gules.
