History :
Dunant was a businessman who was terrified when he arrived in Solferino (Italy) in 1859 and saw the horror of a battle between the Franco-Piedmontese alliance and the Austrian army. He looked for all the help he could to try to save the lives of the greatest possible number of wounded, and that experience he picked up in a book in which he urged the creation of an association to take care of the wounded of war, whatever side they were. A few years later he founded the International Committee of the Red Cross which, with the help of the Swiss government, managed to get several countries to sign the first Geneva Convention.
Thus, as a tribute to the founder and the country that promoted the creation of this movement, the Red Cross flag is the Swiss with the inverted colors. This was decided in 1863 and approved in 1864, at the first Geneva Convention.
