Origin:
The Grimaldi family comes from Italy, and since their reign at the end of the 13th century in the principality. They set the red and white colors as heraldic and stayed on the flag. Before that, during the 17th century, it was also formed by a red and silver lozenge.
Furthermore, the banner of the government of Monaco ceased to be used during the phase in which the principality was annexed to France, that is, 1793-1814.
History:
The flag of Monaco is composed of two horizontal bands of equal width, one red and the other white. The current design dates from 1881 but its colors were chosen as early as the fourteenth century by the Grimaldi family. It is confirmed in Article 7 of the 1962 Constitution of Monaco. Apart from the proportions, it is identical to the flag of Indonesia and Hesse and the historic flag of Alsace: the proportions are 4:5 for the principality, 2:3 for Indonesia and 3:5 for Alsace and the German state.
Meaning:
The flag of Monaco is divided horizontally into two parts, the upper part is red and the lower white. As indicated above, these are the colors of the Grimaldi Room. This combination can also be seen in the Land of Hesse, and in Poland, although in this case the colors are reversed.
