Origin:
The actual pennant, also known as the forth national flag, was officially adopted in 1967. There are several theories about its provenance. On one side, the belief that the colours derive from the Badge Army of the Three Guarantees or "Trigarante Flag". Others think that it is a copy from the Italian flag, although the Flag of Mexico has a greater aspect ratio (4:7) and the green and red colours are darker. The most accepted theory is these colours had its origin on the ensign used by the insurgents of the southern part of mexico.
History:
It is seen by many as one of the most beautiful ensigns ever created. The colours composition of its three vertical stripes, along with the eagle shield, the snake and the cactus, makes it a flag of a great aesthetic beauty and it is very representative of its country.
Meaning :
White represents the union of the country; the red colour, the spilled blood by Mexicans compatriots, and finally green represents hope. Arquitects Pedro Moctezuma Díaz Infante and Francisco Eppens Helgera were the designers of the national shield. Its origin is based on the legend about the end of a pilgrimage of the Mexica, which lasted 200 years. According to their beliefs, the god Huitzilopochtli told them where they should build their city, and that was where they found an eagle perched on a cactus (prickly pear), devouring a snake.
