Origin:
To find the origin of the Maltese flag, we must go back to the Middle Ages.
According to the Maltese tradition, the red and white colors date back to the conquest of the island by the Norman count by Roger I of Sicily also named Roger de Hauteville in 1091. Legend has it that the Maltese helped him fight the Arab occupiers and that to thank them and as a sign of gratitude, the count tore up a corner of his own red and white checked banner to give them.

History:
According to history, during the Second World War, Malta suffered a violent siege under incessant bombing from the Axis (Germany, Italy, Japan). As a reward for this act of bravery, the British King George VI awarded the George Cross (the highest civilian award for acts of courage) to the entire island population in honour of their heroism and resilience. The cross was later added to a blue background of the colonial flag in 1943. At the time of Malta’s independence in 1964, it was kept on the new national flag, but the blue background was replaced by a thin red border.

Meaning:
The Cross of Saint George, which can be seen in the upper left margin of the flag, on the white part, symbolizes the decoration that the British crown gave him in Malta during the reign of George VI.
• White and Red: Have symbolized the traditional colors of the island since the Middle Ages
• The George Cross: Bears the inscription "For Gallantry" and represents the eternal recognition of the courage of Maltese civilians in the face of oppression, in reference to the behavior of Maltese civilians during the Second World War, in favor of Britain
• Until then, the cross of George was granted only to people and not to a group. Since then, it has been inserted into the flag and shield. This act transcended by the letters of the king to Lieutenant General Sir William Dobbie.
Today it is a symbol of resilience and identity, reminding that Malta is the only "decorated island" in the world.
