Origin :
The Islamic Republic of the Gambia, more popularly known simply as Gambia, is a small country of just two million inhabitants, located on the northwest coast of Africa, surrounded by Senegal. The flag of the Gambia u> was approved on February 18, 1965, following the proclamation of the independence of the country.
History :
The Gambia was part of the Empire of Ghana and the Songhai Empire. It was also a Portuguese colony in the sixteenth century, and in the seventeenth it was conquered by the British. In the 19th century, the blue banner with the British flag on the upper left and the country's shield on the right-an elephant in nature-was used. Millions of Gambians were sent to the colonies of America to work as slaves, until in 1807 the slave trade in the British Empire was abolished. The country became an autonomous colony in 1888, and became independent in 1965, the year in which the current flag of Gambia , which was designed by Pa Louis Thomasi, came into force. As a curious fact, it should be noted that this emblem is the same as that of the people from La Mangago, Osa de la Vega.
Meaning :
It consists of five horizontal stripes: red, white, blue, white and green. Red symbolizes sun and savannah, white represents peace and purity, blue alludes to the Gambia river and green refers to the vegetation of the country.
