Origin :
It was created in the year 1960, after Cyprus obtained the independence of Great Britain. It was designed by the Turkish Cypriot professor Ismet V. Güney.
History :
Cyprus officially became a British colony in 1914. As a consequence, from 1922 until its independence, the country wore a blue flag with the British flag in the upper left quadrant and two red lions in the right half.
In 1960, once proclaimed independence, President Makarios approved the design presented by Güney and the flag of Cyprus happened to have a white background with the map of the country in golden color and two branches of olive tree under he. In addition, it should be noted that it is one of the only two countries in the world that include their map in the emblem. The other is Kosovo.
However, in 1974 a pro-government coup took place in which Turkey ended up intervening, which invaded the northeast part of the island. This invasion gave rise to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is included in the map that appears on the Cypriot flag . This territory is not internationally recognized as a State, although it has its own insignia.
In 2004 there was a referendum to choose a new flag that would unite the Turkish and Greek communities of the island under the United Republic of Cyprus, but it was not successful.
Meaning :
The white background symbolizes peace, just as the olive branches refer to the desire for peace among the Turks and Greeks of the island. On the other hand, the golden color of the map represents the country's copper wealth.
