Origin:
The flag of Andorra is the civil and state flag of the Principality of Andorra.
Story:
The flag dates from the second half of the 19th century and replaced the previous red and yellow (blood and gold) flag.
Meaning:
The three colours, blue, yellow and red, recall those of the flag of Catalonia (gules and gold) and France (azur and gules), all in a vertical arrangement evoking the second. The difference in width between the bands (which is 8:9:8) with the loaded central band evokes, vaguely, the Spanish flag.
The crest of Andorra is formed by four districts, two belonging to each Coprince (the bishop of Urgell, the count of Foix):
Upper left part of the foam: mitre and crosse (golden on a red background) of the bishop of Urgell, Episcopal coprince
Upper right part of the escutcheon: 3 red bars (gold with three gules pieces) of the coat of arms of the Count of Foix, first French Coprince (Occitan)
Lower left part of the escutcheon: the 4 Catalan bars (gold with four gueules), escutcheons of Aragon and Catalonia
lower right part of the escutcheon: the 2 cows of the Count of Béarn (gold, with two cows, tuned, joined and clarinet azure)
The crest may be accompanied by the motto "Virtus Unita Fortior " (unity is strength).
