Origin:
The flag of Spain has its origin in the eighteenth century, after a contest of different designs of the flag. 12 designs were presented and the winner began to be used from 1785 on both Squares and Maritime Castles.

The flag of Spain is also known by the name of "the Rojigualda" due to the colors used: red and yellow gualda.

This flag contains three horizontal stripes with their respective national shield. The yellow strip has twice the height of the other two red stripes, so the order of these would be: red, yellow and red.

The current Spanish shield was born in 1230 with the need of Fernando III to unify his shield due to the union of Castile and lion. The shield suffered different modifications due to political and territorial situations.
It will be on October 5, 1981 when the new shield model of the present Spanish flag is finally approved.

History:
It was in the sixteenth century when the flag began to be used with a national character in Spain.
We go back to the reign of the Catholic Monarchs when from 1492 until 1506 and after the union of the Crown of Castile, Aragon and Navarre the previous separated flags were unified.

At the time, in which Juana I of Castile married the Archduke of Austria Philip, the Spanish flags had a common feature: Cruz de Borgoña Flag.

This first design had different modifications, it's necessary to highlight the one that came from the hand of Felipe V who replaced it with real weapons on white cloth. The white color as a representation of the House of Bourbon, but this house also reigned in France, Naples, Tuscany, Parma and Sicily.

All the flags of these kingdoms had the white color, reason why the flag of Spain was confused with the other flags. After several confusions in the sea, Carlos III in 1785 wanted the Spanish flag to be easy to distinguish.

Therefore, the origin of our current flag of Spain arises after a maritime need to be differentiated from other territories. Now, we can also find the Spanish flag for office, so its current use is very varied.

The monarch chose the colors red and yellow since they were those that created less confusion. It was then that the weapons were included near the pole, on the left side, where the shield is currently located.

But when does the spanish flag begin to be popularly used? It was in 1843 when Isabel II decided to name it as a national flag, after hard battles against France. This ended up being used in other areas such as ports and customs, starting simply as a naval flag.

Meaning:
The most popular theory about the colors of the flag of Spain states that the color red represents the spilled blood by Spanish people after their conquests and that the yellow color is a symbol of the riches achieved in them.

The Royal Crown of the shield is known as "the timbre" (to indicate the nobility of the person who owns it), symbolizing national sovereignty.

The shield of Spain contains the symbolism of the kingdoms of Castilla, Leon, Navarra and Aragon that are divided into four parts. The kingdom of Granada is also represented by the fruit of the pomegranate just at the bottom of the barracks.

The silver pillars on both sides of the crest represent the Columns of Hercules, on both appears a royal crown in reference to the house of Bourbon-Anjou. In the two parts of the coat of arms are the words plus ultra meaning "beyond" in Spanish.
