The Macedonian flag was approved in 1995, after it had to be changed which was chosen in 1991, due to a complaint by Greece.
History :
Macedonia obtains its independence in 1991, when it ceases to be part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Since 1941, Macedonia had a red banner with a golden star, which was first placed in the center, and from 1944 it went to the upper left side. After independence, the star was changed to a central sun from which emanated 16 yellow rays. This symbol is known as the Sun of Vergina or Argive Star and has its origin in Greece, in a region called Macedonia, which has nothing to do with the country. Well, it turns out that the Greeks were not very happy to use a symbol of theirs in the emblem of a neighboring country, so they even made an economic blockade to Macedonia in 1994 and denounced them the following year in the World Organization of Intellectual Property. Finally, both countries reached an agreement that made Macedonia modify its flag - and its constitution - for the current one.
Meaning :
The flag of Macedonia currently has a yellow sun in the center, from which split eight rays of the same color that extend to the edges. This sun symbolizes the desire for freedom.
