Origin:
The European Flag was designed by Arsène Heitz and Paul M. G. Lévy in 1955 for the Counsil of Europe. But it was not accepted after 30 years by the European Union Leaders as the official symbol of the european identity.
History:
Despite the fact that it represents either the European Union and the Counsil of Europe, it is mainly related to the first one. Besides, it is used to represent the continent on the Sports events and as a democracy symbol in foreign countries.
This last aspect (The European Union as a pre-democracy symbol) has been such, that the later countries which have joined the EEC have made the designs of their new flags similar to it, as it is the case of Bosnia & Herzegovina and Kosovo.
Meaning:
The European Union flag is composed by twelve stars of five gold peaks on a dark blue background, forming a circle. It is not casuality that the stars adopt this spherical shape, but it serves to represent union and perfection. Likewise, the stars must have the tips up and arranged as clock hours, 1 to 12.
An interesting fact is that the number of stairs in the European Flag does not vary depending on the number of countries which are added to the EU, but its meaning is fixed, which is Armony and solidarity.
