Origin :
The origin of the flag of Chicago is in a public contest organized in 1915 to choose the emblem of the city. It was the poet Wallace Rice who established the rules, and it was precisely his design that was chosen among more than a hundred. Thus, on April 4, 1917, the design of Rice was approved.
History :
Initially I had two stars. However, in 1933 it was decided to add one more in honor of the Universal Exposition that was held that same year in Chicago. Six years later it was decided to add another one in memory of the Fort Dearborn massacre, but this was placed to the left of the badge, being the first of the stars, whose six points represent transportation, work, commerce, finance, population and health. And the Chicago flag could have another star if the city had hosted the 2016 Olympic Games, something that ultimately did not happen.
Meaning :
The white stripes of the flag represent the north, south and west of Chicago. The two blue bands symbolize Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. We have already explained what the first and the last star mean, which were added after creating the banner. Well, the second represents the great Chicago fire of 1871, and its six points allude to religion, education, aesthetics, justice, charity and civic pride. Finally, the third star refers to the Chicago Universal Exposition of 1893, and its tips represent the six emblems that have been in the city: France, Great Britain, Virginia, the territory of the Northwest, the territory of Indiana and Illinois.
